Art
Aims
It is the aim of the Art Department to inspire each girl studying Art to consider her place in the world and to communicate her personal response to it.
Teaching and Learning
What happens in an Art studio can be grouped into making Art, learning about Art, and learning from Art. One of the department's key aims is to provide learning experiences which stimulate and encourage investigation to develop personal ideas, feelings and responses to a subject, issue or problem. There is always a practical element to every lesson. We learn the theory and then apply what has been learned so the focus in Art is always on learning by doing. We work with traditional processes: drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D work with clay. This work is extended by using digital technology and lots of experimentation with materials.
Assessment for learning
The schemes of work are directly linked to the assessment criteria. We share this information with our girls as we believe this is the best way of helping them to understand how to improve and make progress. At each assessment point we give marks and written feedback which girls then have time to respond to, time to make a difference. We use a progress log “PLOG”, to document each girl’s individual development. It is a simple and very visual record of assessment points and is kept in girl’s sketchbook so she can see how well she is doing and check that she is working towards achieving her personal targets.
Home Learning
A wide variety of different tasks are given for home learning. It may be drawing to develop skills of observing and recording or taking some photographs that will be used in the next lesson; gathering images as a resource to make work more personal or critically analysing the work of an artist. All work is directly related to the scheme of work and forms a key part of the assessment each half term.
All home learning is available for girls to access on Show my Homework – all home learning activities will be published by individual staff members on the Show My Homework website which can be found by following the link on the school’s homepage. Students and parents can access this through their accounts or by filtering the results.
Equipment
We have arranged for Art packs to be purchased through the Parent Pay system. The packs include all the materials and sketchbooks need for KS3 and KS4.

How Parents/ Carers can help |
Do take your daughter to Art exhibitions. In Year 7, a visit to the National Portrait Gallery will be helpful and in Year 8 a trip to Tate Britain to look at landscapes and seascapes would support her class work. Talk to your daughter about her art work. Artists always welcome feedback and support in developing confidence with drawing. Follow the department on twitter to be kept up to date with exhibitions in our gallery @FBA_GALLERY |
