Fukushima Narratives
The narrative behind this exhibition spans 40 years and began on a trip to Hayle Mill in Kent, when Eleanor witnessed cotton and linen rags being shredded and pulped into beautiful rag paper. This started a paper-textile journey which eventually led her to Fukushima, North East Japan.
Fukushima experienced a devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011. The shadow of this disaster halted paper production and now the added restrictions of the pandemic have consigned the 1000 year old paper making traditions of Fukushima farmers to a curiosity. Eleanor’s paper pieces and paper sculptures tell hidden or incomplete stories of fragility and strength within the fragments of paper from which they are formed.
Eleanor’s work is shown alongside the textile treasures of her weaving teacher, Harue Yoshida, and archive photographs and handmade paper of Koichi Anzai, 6th generation papermaker of Kamikawasaki, Fukushima. Yoshida Sensei introduced Eleanor to artisans and craftspeople of Fukushima and together they visited the papermakers of Kamikawasaki. This photographic archive and textile collection offer a rare and unique glimpse into traditional material culture under threat and represent textile and paper processes which inform Eleanor’s research and practice.
