Aims
A-level Law develops knowledge and understanding of the English Legal system.
The study of Law at A-level enables students to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. Studying Law develops students' problem solving skills through the application of legal rules, together with an understanding of legal method and reasoning. These skills provide excellent preparation for those students who wish to progress to degree level study or pursue a wide range of careers.
Teaching and Learning
The AS award requires students to complete two units which are assessed by two written examinations; this can be a standalone qualification or be progressed to A2.
The A-level award requires the students to complete two units which are assessed by two written examinations consist of two written examinations.
Assessment for learning
Assessment feedback is given in oral and written format with Closing the Gap sheets put in their homework books. The desire to get involved with mock trial competitions and debating is essential in assessing learning with regular mooting competitions taking place.
Home Learning
- Students are expected to do background reading in the subject before and after class with regular essays set for homework
- Court visits in Year 12 to Chelmsford Magistrates and Crown Court. In Year 13 Court visits to the Supreme Court, Royal Courts of Justice and The Old Bailey
- Show my Homework – all home learning activities will be published by individual staff members on the Show My Homework website which can be found by following the link on the school’s homepage. Students and parents can access this through their accounts or by filtering the results.

Trips are organised in Year 12 to go to the Chelmsford Magistrates and Crown Courts. In Year 13 to go to Supreme Court, Royal Courts of Justice and The Old Bailey Revision lessons are held over Easter for Year’s 12 & 13 and catch up one to one tutoring is available |

Key websites such as the Law Bank are very useful for revision Practical help with testing them orally on each unit TV programmes such as “Silk” and “The Jury” are watched in class to get a practical and visual aspect of the law Regular reading of Newspapers and watching the news is essential to keep up to date with current affairs in law |
