The Farm at FBA

We are privileged and extremely lucky to have our very own farm at The Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls. Established in 2013, the farm has flourished and we currently have miniature Shetland ponies, goats, chickens, ducks, quail, rabbit and guinea pigs. It has become a place of wellbeing, creativity and belonging. Pupils have the opportunity to visit the farm during morning and lunch breaks; form groups in KS3 have a programme of activities that are fun and engaging, while teaching pupils about animal care and welfare, and the environment. We have seen the farm make a real difference to pupils’ physical and mental wellbeing and help them to build life skills including confidence, communication and the ability to work with others. For more information and to see our animals see The Farm at FBA page.

Trips & Activities

We offer a wide range of trips and visits each year which includes trips to the theatre, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, visits to universities and geography field trips. We want pupils to think globally. Over the past ten years, we have built a fantastic relationship with our partner school, the Marienschule Opladen, near Cologne. Alongside an annual exchange we have run a number or exciting international projects. In 2023/24 some of our pupils will travel to Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Spain and Iceland.

The Appleby Gallery

We are one of the only comprehensive schools in the country to have an art gallery. Located at the heart of the school, The Appleby Gallery provides a space for pupils to experience the work of established and emerging artists with a regular programme of exhibitions and pupils also display their work. Pupils can visit the gallery at break and lunch times and it is used as part of the form time programme and in art lessons. For more information including exhibitions and how to arrange appointments see The Appleby Gallery page.

The Railway

A unique feature in our school is the railway. This was cleverly built and put together by our Railway & Engineering Club with help from a group of local volunteers. The railways provides the opportunity for pupils to explore careers in engineering and gain hands on experience of maintaining and driving the trains.
